Careers Day - Pathways and Opportunities Post-GCSE

All of Year 10 took part in a careers day recently, designed to teach them about different pathways, skills and opportunities waiting for them post-GCSEs. The day included four workshops that focused on different elements to prepare students for the future:

  • Team-building at an assessment centre
  • Mock interview and preparation (pictured below)
  • Character and resilience
  • Pathways

In the assessment workshops, students analysed themselves through a series of tasks to find characteristics they could develop more, in order to help them in the future. The workshop focused on being able to work as a team and presenting to an audience. By the end of the workshop students said they felt more confident debating and communicating, recognising how these skills can be applied in the future.

Other workshops focused on character and the resilience you need when making decisions about your future and applying for jobs. Students were put into situations which they had to resolve through a range of activities, and this included everyday scenarios they may face.

In the final workshop, students created a Unifrog profile, learned about pathways such as university, apprenticeships and jobs, and built up knowledge on what they need to work towards their desired careers. Students said they left that session feeling clearer about what they needed to achieve to reach their goals.

Every Year 10 student took part in a mock interview. In preparation for the interview, students were given a selection of jobs to prepare for pre-interview and on the day they would be interviewed as if applying for that Job.

The skills students used for this included how to research for a job before an interview and how to prepare for questions. Before they went for the interview, they had a workshop on speaking and body language. After the interview, all students received feedback and targets to improve.

Battersea Power Station said they were "super-impressed" by the knowledge, resilience and integrity that our Year 10s showed.

Overall, it was a very successful day that allowed students to begin to focus on their future and what they want to do in life and recognising the skills, experiences and education they might need.
