Wandsworth's Young Chef of the Year
Harris Academy Battersea student Nell Cairo Bidias has been crowned Wandsworth Young Chef of the Year.
Nell beat eight other finalists from schools around the borough to scoop the title, following a tense final cook-off judged by top chefs, including Anna Haugh-Kelly, head chef of Gordon Ramsey’s London House restaurant, as seen pictured with Nell.
Local schools within Wandsworth took part in the competition, each holding ‘cook-offs’ to whittle down entrants to one finalist. The finalists were also taken on a trip to Billingsgate Seafood Training school to learn more about sourcing, selecting and fileting fish, as well as attending a cookery masterclass at South Thames College to help them fine-tune their skills in cooking, budgeting, sourcing ingredients and food hygiene.
Nell was awarded the trophy along with a £250 cheque for wowing the judges with her menu of Leek and Potato Veloute, Sweet Potato and King Prawn Risotto and Coconut Flan with Caramelised Clementine.
