The Beat Goes On
As part of the HABS Press team, we were given the exciting opportunity to represent our school at an event at Battersea Power Station. The Beat Goes On, held on 21st March, brought together a wide range of cultures, celebrating diversity through music, performance, and creativity.
A Day Behind the Scenes
We arrived at Battersea Power Station and met the production crew who would be supporting us throughout the day. They helped us prepare by giving us a clear structure for our role as young journalists, including lines we would later deliver live on stage.
Soon after, we went down for a soundcheck where we rehearsed our introductions. Our task was to present three different performances, with only short gaps in between to create new links live. The audience was incredibly supportive, which helped us stay confident, creative, and resilient throughout the experience.
Interviewing and Live Broadcasting
Later in the day, we moved upstairs to prepare questions for an interview with Kemi Akinola. We discussed ideas as a team, focusing on thoughtful and engaging questions about the event and its celebration of cultural diversity.
Before going live, we also recorded a voiceover in what felt like a hidden corner of the venue—down a corridor, past the toilets, and into a small room with surprisingly excellent sound quality.
We then made our way to the stage to conduct the interview. Everything went smoothly, and the audience remained extremely supportive throughout. We also helped transition the programme to performances by Lisa Maffia and Romeo Dunn, who delivered an incredible live set.
A Memorable Experience
By the end of the event, we had completed our roles as young journalists and joined the other student media teams in leaving the venue together.
The Beat Goes On was an unforgettable experience that allowed us to develop confidence, teamwork, and communication skills in a real-world media setting. We are proud to have represented HABS Press and to have been part of such a vibrant celebration of culture and creativity.
