Message from the Principal

18th August 2020

Dear Parents and Students of Year 11 and Year 13 students

As you might be aware, on the 17th of August Ofqual announced that students who have undertaken GCSE grades or A Level grades this summer will be issued their centre assessment grade. This is the grade the teachers awarded students and has been robustly moderated by the academy.

The exception to this is when the grade awarded to students by Ofqual (this is called the calculated grade) is higher than the centre assessment grade. In this instance all students will be awarded the higher of the two grades.

On the 13th August some A Level students collected their results and were rightly devastated. We are pleased as a school this has been rectified and on the 20th August you will be emailed your rightful grades. Universities have already been told to honour places if students were rejected due to failing to meet the entry requirements. Please note that Year 13 students are not required to come into school to collect their results. They will be emailed to students on the morning of 20th August. This is so that all Year 13 students can receive them as efficiently as possible and begin making calls to universities if required.

On 20th August we will also issue centre assessment grades to GCSE students. One week later some students may be issued some adjustments to their grades if, when moderated by Ofqual, their grade improved. In the vast majority of instances there will be little change to the GCSE grades students will receive on Thursday. Year 11 students must come into school to receive their results on Thursday 20th August at 9am. This is so that we can support them with enrolment to Sixth Form and talk through next steps. Please be aware that social distancing measures will be in place. Please see the school website for more details regarding this.

At the moment, BTEC and CTEC results are still calculated grades (grades standardised by Ofqual) and not the centre assessed grades. With growing pressure, this may change very quickly and we will keep you updated.

Mostly, I would like to apologise to any student that has been distressed by the awarding of exam grades. We as a school are extremely proud of the resilience of all year 13 and year 11 students at such an uncertain and challenging time in their lives. We know how hard they have worked for the results they have achieved and we are glad that the process of awarding grades is now much fairer for all.

Finally, I would like to re-iterate that the school is here to support students and parents through this process. Should you have any queries at all,  please do get in touch.

Warmest wishes,

Miss Leigh
