PE

Overview

PE at HABs gives students the chance to enhance their sporting ability both through development of skills and learning of new sports.  The six mastery strands within PE are as follows: Power, Endurance and Control, which together comprise the ‘Practical Skills’ necessary to excel in PE, and Decision-making and Leadership - ‘Cognitive Skills’ that are not only fundamental to athletes and sportspeople, but are also important character traits for young people to be successful in any field. The final mastery strand is Attitude: it is vital in PE to have a positive attitude towards your team, other players, coaches and officials and the development of this also links into the Leadership strand in terms of gaining respect from peers.  Students in PE will focus on different mastery strands throughout the year, whilst learning different sports and the knowledge and skills specific to that sport (techniques, tactics and rules). The sports include basketball, rugby, football, netball, table tennis, swimming, athletics, rounders, softball and tennis.

Mastery Strands

Practical Skills

1. Power - Athletes utilise Power
I can demonstrate excellent power in the movement which allows the skill to be effective
I can demonstrate good power in the movement which allows the skill to be effective the majority of the time
I can demonstrate sufficient power in a movement which allows me to complete the skill with some effect
I often find it difficult to demonstrate power to a movement therefore the skill is not effective

2. Endurance - Athletes can maintain performance
I can last a full activity at the necessary pace to have a powerful influence on the outcome
I can participate for long periods of the activity with very few pauses with some influence on the outcome
I can participate intermittently, but cannot maintain activity.  My influence on outcome is limited.
I can participate for only short periods of time during an activity

3. Control - Athletes maintain control
I can maintain excellent control of the movement which allows me to complete the skill effectively
I can maintain good control of the movement which allows me to complete the skill effectively the majority of the time
I can maintain some control of the movement which allows me to complete the skill with some effect
I often find it difficult to maintain control of the movement and therefore the skill is not effective

Cognitive Skills

4. Decision Making - Athletes make the right decisions
I can always apply effective decision making whilst under pressure in a game situation
I can apply good decision making whilst under some pressure in a game situation
I can apply decision making skills some of the time whilst under limited amount of pressure in a competitive situation
I can apply decision making in isolated practices but often cannot apply this to a competitive situation

5. Leadership - Athletes are leaders
I can demonstrate effective communication, knowledge of the sport and have gained respect from the students through my actions
I can demonstrate good communication, knowledge of the sport and is gaining respect from the students through my actions
I can sometimes demonstrate good communication, knowledge of the sport but is lacking confidence in some areas
I demonstrate a basic level of communication and knowledge of the sport but often lack confidence

Attitude

6. Attitude - Athletes value positive attitude
I am a role model to my peers with excellent attitude, organisation, commitment, effort and sportsmanship at all times
I demonstrate good attitude, organisation, commitment, effort and sportsmanship at all times
I demonstrate good attitude, organisation, commitment, effort and sportsmanship but not constantly
I often find it difficult to demonstrate good attitude, organisation, commitment, effort and sportsmanship all of the time.

From Year 9 onwards students will have the opportunity to select PE as an option subject and continue with the development of skills in each of the sports they learn. They will learn more technical skills, such as a reverse layup in basketball. Students will also learn how to officiate games and begin doing so for the sport they are learning, including the hand signals and command words.  Students will develop their knowledge of both attacking and defensive tactics and learn how to analyse a team’s performance.

In year 10 and 11 students who choice PE as an option will complete the Edexcel Level 2 BTEC Sport course. This course consists of 4 units, which look at leadership in sport, practical skills in sport, developing a personal exercise programme and an exam unit which includes types of training and the monitoring of training and fitness levels and how they can be used to increase performance in sport.

In year 12 and 13, students can choose to do the CTECH Sport course (Extended Certificate, Diploma or Extended Diploma).
