Human Studies

Overview

Human Studies is a course specific to Harris Academy Battersea and aims to combine a range of subjects taught across the school and implement the subject of classics for our younger students.

We aim to teach students about different elements and social issues in society, looking first historically at these issues before bringing them up to date and examining if and how they might affect people in modern society.

We have carefully selected a range of subjects that are extremely relevant to students today and that are vital to them developing an in-depth understanding about with knowledge about the origin of these ideas and issues.

Course breakdown

Taught in Year 1:

Students study inequality in society through the topics of slavery, racism and sexism. They consider these themes in the past and today, considering how these issues have progressed or changed.

Students also learn about politics through the Roman Empire and today’s society.

Finally, in the Summer terms students will learn about the role of media in the past and today, considering its impact and influence.

Taught in Year 2:

Firstly, in the Autumn terms students will learn about religion in the past and today. They will consider main world religions and the current religious climate within the UK.

Students will also learn about education through key thinkers from history and the current systems of education that we have in the UK.

Finally, in the Summer terms students will consider the history of medicine before debating current medical ethical issues in our society.
