Year 10 - Change to GCSE Options Subjects

After careful consideration, it has been decided by the Academy Leadership Team that students would benefit from having a reduction from four to three GCSE option subjects.

The decision to remove an options subject has been made primarily with students’ wellbeing in mind. The majority of students surveyed have reported feeling overwhelmed and anxious about the amount of learning they are missing due to Covid-19. Students have lost three months of learning already and the current situation still remains uncertain which will, undoubtedly, have an impact on the teaching and learning in the next academic year.

The decrease in the number of options will mean that students are required to learn less content, have less content to catch up on and will gain time to spend on other subjects. This will hopefully reduce the anxiety felt by students during this time.

The extra time gained will be used to support students with extra lessons in English and Mathematics.

Before taking this decision, we consulted with higher education providers, including leading universities, and we have been assured that this decision will not negatively impact students’ next steps such as attending universities, colleges or starting apprenticeships.

Students will select their three GCSE options through Microsoft Teams through the Year 10 group. All students will be able to choose three options that they are currently studying, but will not be able to select a new option subject. Students will need to have selected their three options by Wednesday 24th June.

The changes will take effect on Monday 29th June and students will only study three options (and core subjects) from this date.

If you have any questions about this change, could you please email Mr Myers, Assistant Principal, directly at

Yours sincerely,

Ms Leigh, Principal
