Year 13 Physics Students Attend Royal Institution Youth Summit on Space
On Monday, twelve of our Year 13 Physics students had the exciting opportunity to attend the Royal Institution Youth Summit, this year themed around Space. The event brought together students from across the country to explore cutting-edge developments and critical questions in modern space science.
The day began with a series of captivating lectures delivered by leading experts in the field, covering a range of fascinating topics:
-
AI and Lunar Exploration – A look at how artificial intelligence is being used to identify potential habitats in lunar caves.
-
Robots vs Humans in Space – A thought-provoking argument in favour of robotic exploration over human spaceflight.
-
The Space Economy – An insightful overview of the rapidly growing commercial and economic landscape of the space industry.
During the catered lunch break, students explored the historic Royal Institution building, including the famous basement laboratories where pioneering scientists once carried out ground-breaking research.
In the afternoon, students took part in structured discussion groups, where they tackled complex ethical and societal issues related to space exploration. Topics included:
-
Who should govern space?
-
What responsibilities do we have as we explore beyond Earth?
-
How should we deal with the growing problem of space debris?
Our students represented Harris Battersea with maturity and enthusiasm, engaging deeply with the content and contributing thoughtfully to the discussions. The summit was an inspiring opportunity to connect classroom learning with real-world scientific challenges — and to consider the future role they might play in addressing them.
