Today marks the last day of Anti-Bullying Week, and we’re learning how to recognise when someone might be experiencing bullying. Look out for changes in mood, behaviour, confidence, or friendships and always speak to a trusted adult if you’re worried about someone.

Amazon Book Hunt Frenzy! The hidden surprises for the launch of Harris Academy Battersea’s Book Club.

The thrill of a book hunt surged through Harris Academy Battersea during Enrichment time on Monday. Our Book Club students and Student Librarians were welcomed by a surprise in the library, to mark the launch of this year's Book Club.

In partnership with Amazon, Harris Academy Battersea have been gifted 256 books, worth £2,000! These books serve multiple purposes to the school and students, and we look forward to seeing them being enjoyed to their full potential.

Firstly, the Book Club have been gifted copies of ‘Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone’ to read together as their first chosen book. Book Clubs provide brilliant benefits for students, from encouraging them to read outside their comfort zone, to understanding how their peers think about and interpret books, further developing their own literary understanding.

That was not all Amazon had in store for the Book Club students and Student Librarians! The wonderful Amazon Volunteers hid some of the gifted books around the library for the students to find. These books were all the first in a series, from ‘The Hunger Games’ to ‘Geek Girl’ and even ‘Pretty Little Liars’. The students were able to pick the series they wanted and take that first book home with them to keep. Then, once they have finished the first book, Amazon has gifted us the rest of the series for students to loan from the library.

Alongside their book, the students also received a handmade bookmark and have been invited by Amazon to enter the Book Review Challenge. By writing a short summary of why they would recommend the book to someone else and designing a brand-new front cover, they have the chance to win a £100 Amazon Gift Voucher.

Finally, Amazon gifted us 75 copies of ‘Atomic Habits’ for the 6th Form students to read during ‘Read to Succeed’, which is ran weekly during tutor time. This is a great initiative that further encourages students to dedicate time to reading meaningfully and engaging in thoughtful discussions with their peers. We hope that this experience improves the students love for reading outside of schooltime, and this partnership with Amazon has been paramount in making more reading opportunities widely available.

Harris Academy Battersea want to say a huge thank you to Amazon and the volunteers for gifting so many wonderful books to our school and helping to organise a fun event for the Book Club. We know that the books will be enjoyed by so many of our students for many years to come!
